5 Ways to Create Sustainable Halloween Decorations

Halloween costumes and decorations are fun, but they can end up in the landfill if you're not careful.

Check out these 5 ways to create sustainable Halloween decorations to save money, reduce waste, and still have a fantastic holiday!

1) Make your own costumes

One of the first things you should do is make your own costumes. You can recycle old clothing, buy new fabric, and create a new outfit. That way, you'll have a costume that will last for years.

Second, buying only what you need for your costumes is essential. Consider making some decorations instead of buying them from the store.

2) Use last year's decorations

One way to make your decorations more sustainable is by using last year's decorations. The best part of this idea is that you'll have something new and different for every season!

If you prefer using last year's decorations, there are plenty of other ways to create sustainable decorations.

3) Buy them second hand

This is a great way to reuse old decorations and still get the effect you want for your house.

Plus, you can find some really unique items this way. Plenty of online marketplaces specialize in second-hand goods, so go out and have some fun with it!

4) Borrow them from a friend

If you're looking for a way to make your decorations more sustainable, try borrowing from friends. Rather than buying new items every year, borrow from a friend who has previously decorated their house.

If your friend is in the same neighborhood as you, see if they would be willing to lend you their decorations for the year. They may even be able to leave them out on their lawn so that everyone can enjoy them!

5) Get crafty!

  • Make your own pumpkin lanterns by painting pumpkins and cutting holes for lights (this is a good project for the kids).
  • Dress up as a ghost, witch, or other spooky characters with old clothes that you already have in your closet.
  • Use recycled materials to make decorations like old clothes or paper bags cut into different shapes and decorated with paint or marker.
  • Draw simple faces on white pumpkins using markers and paint them orange to give them more of a pumpkin feel.
  • Hang some glow-in-the-dark spider webs from trees around your home.
